GitHub Training Opportunity: To help everyone gain the skills necessary to manage code developed in classes or labs, we are pleased to announce a new Git & GitHub training course available on Canvas for all JHU affiliates. Developed by Ali Madooei, Associate Teaching Professor in Computer Science, this course follows a “learning by doing” approach:

  • Modules 1–3 cover essentials like repository management, command-line local workflows, and collaboration through pull requests.
  • Module 4 is designed specifically for those wishing to use GitHub Classroom and autograding tools in their teaching.

Shape the Future of Research Software Support at Hopkins: We are currently building the Research Software Support Network (RSSN), a centralized hub connecting researchers who develop software with essential support services across campus. To help launch the Network:

  • Take the Survey: Please participate in or share out our Needs Analysis Survey for  faculty, postdocs, students, and/or staff who write code, scripts, or software as part of the research process.
  • Learn More: Visit the RSSN webpage and sign up for our mailing list to see how we are working to improve the discoverability and accessibility of research software support services.

These updates are brought to you by the JHU OSPO, the hub for open source at JHU. Feel free to reach out to ospo@jhu.edu with questions or requests for help. OSPO staff provide a variety of services, including:

  • Consulting support for open source projects around sustainability planning, strategic planning, and community engagement.
  • Best Practices guidance on licensing and making research software findable and citable.
  • Join us the first Wednesday of each month from 1:00–2:00 PM ET via Zoom for OSPO Office Hours, an informal drop-in session to discuss funding, licensing, or any open source questions you may have.
